How did you get close to flying? When have you started to learn how to fly?
- Before I started flying we visited many parachuting, gliding clubs with my father, to be telling the truth I grew u pin them. Officially I started flying in 1991, after school. I was always interested in flying, so it was natural for me to choose flying and sports as my carreerpath.
How was your last year?
- Last year was quite a stirring season in South-Africa. We flew in our Extra 300 aerobatics formation with my teammate, Larry Beamish. It was a great privilege for me to participate in the first race of the Grand Aero Challenge, for the invitation of my good friend, Zoltán Veres.
How does your actual season work out?
- The year started with a great event. I got an invitation for the Al-Ain round of the Aero GP race. This was an enormous experience for me. Again I come to the Grand Aero Challenge, I’m looking forward to it very much. This is a big and entertaining race. This year I contentrate particularly on the stunt flying World Championships in September. After these races most probably I will fly in China and South Africa later this year.
How did the invitation for the grand Aero Challenge affect you?
- I was very happy when very good friend of mine and fellow show stunt flyer, Zoltán Veres invited me for this extraordinary air triathlon.
You flew on the Grand Aero Challenge last year also, how did you like the competition?
- I enjoyed the race of last year very much. The flying amused me very much, the events were exciting. The organisers and the audience gave us a friendly welcome. And the Lake Balaton is a particularly great sight, it is a pleasure flying above the lake. I’m looking forward to this year’s race also, I’d like to learn from the big aces.
You got 2nd place overall last year, and won the balloon hunt. What kind of knowledge, preparation is necessary to be effective in the race? What do you have to pay attention to during the flying?
- There are three different events, each of them needs different abilities. The pilot has to be aware of the limits, espacially the limits of the plane on low altitude. The freestyl flying to music needs the biggest flying experience, the balloon hunt needs especially great concentration. The most important during the race is to always check the plane’s altitude above the water.
The world is hold their ears on your actual home, the Republic of South Africa, because of the football world cup. Do you follow the event? Which team would you like to see on the top of the podium?
- The football world championship is a fantastic event and a great opportunity for my country to show the world that South Africa is a world class country, where anyone can experience this part of the world. Of course I’d like our team to go as far as possible. Talking about other teams I love to watch Brasil’s intimate play.
As I see your programme are quite busy nowadays. What are your plans for the next period?
- Right now I am preparing for the Grand Aero Challenge with full throttle, after that I prepare for the world champs. I recently bought a new plane, an MX-2, I can hardly wait to try it, to see what it can do.
Thank you for the pleasant chat, see you in a few days in Balatonfüred! |
